Here are the films we were considering for the first film showing fundraiser:

The Corporation (excellent overview on the corporate model and the problems inherent in it)

Golden Rule: The Investment Theory of Politics (documentary about Thomas Fergusons’ theory which articulates how powerful investors, not unorganized voters, dominate campaigns and elections and thus largely dictate policy)

The Economics of Happiness (on localization of politics and economics as a solution to the myriad crises we face today)

Capitalism: A Love Story (Michael Moore finally gets up the nerve to attack capitalism itself and does so fairly effectively with some heart wrenching anecdotes; has some good coverage of evictions and foreclosures that humanize this problem and relate well with OOH)

Inside Job (Very good documentary on the 2008 housing crisis and subsequent financial crises, explains the situation about as well as any I’ve seen and is a very well produced documentary)

Lifting the Veil: Obama and the Failure of Capitalist Democracy (excellent documentary on electoral politics and the Democratic party as the ‘graveyard of social movements.’ I like this one a lot, but it may not be the best introductory film. I would love to screen it down the road a bit however, perhaps as we get closer to the election season.)

The Yes Men Fix the World (the ‘Yes Men’ are very clever political pranksters that pose as corporate execs and humiliate large businesses while exposing their questionable practices)

Rise Like Lions: OWS and the Seeds of Revolution (Good documentary on the Occupy Movement specifically, could be good for building momentum for the coming American Spring!)

————————————————————————————————————

My opinion after watching them is that we show Rise Like Lions. It is a surprisingly well done documentary on the Occupy movement that has a particular focus on the future and I think it would be great for showing what the movement has achieved and where it is going. There is even a call at the end to support your local Occupy!

If you want to watch it you can do so here.

If you have any other suggestions or comments, please leave them here in the next couple days or for ever hold your peace because we need to get this moving, secure our equipment get the posters and pamphlets designed and distributed and more! Depending on how fast we can get things moving we are still aiming for next Friday.

Films for Action has offered to co-sponsor the event, provide the DVD and design the posters.

We still need to source a PA (I have emailed Mike E to get in touch with church mgmt to see if they have one we can borrow, anyone else know where we can get one? Speakers loud enough?). Lucky, we have a projector and screen yes?

Anything I’m forgetting?

Voting for “The Corporation” as a first movie. Projector is in the works, and Paul and I are working on sound. Player is available. Should have an answer by tonight if we are logistically set up. Still shooting for next Friday, no? If anyone else has a nifty PA though, that would be good. We should be able to pull it together with currently available resources though.

Poster/flyer for event made by Tim of Lawrence Films for Action! See attached. FYI event is moved back to March 3rd (Saturday) to give us time to establish discussion panel members and to do more outreach.

Melissa have you gotten the panel together yet? Markus is confirmed, but we need others (we had talked about Lucky, Tamara, Mike C, Rosemarie). Markus had also expressed a desire to get on the same page with the panel by meeting up ahead of time so perhaps this should be arranged (if nothing else just getting there 30 mins or so early to talk about what the panel Q&A format will be and get acquainted).

Markus: I think it is a great idea to sell popcorn and soda / water, where should we get the popcorn? It would take forever to pop individual bags and have enough..

I guess that depends on the budget you have. I assumed their wasn’t much of a budget, and my idea for eliminating the risk of losing money was to have people bake and bring stuff to sell. If Treasury wanted to spring for store-bought items, that works too, but people might also be willing to donate items like that, as well as canned soda. We could probably get popcorn at Topsy’s or have someone pop a bunch and portion it out. I can acquire portioning supplies. I think for something like this, the more homemade, individual items, the better. (They are donated, so they cost us nothing up front.) We should also have any existing merchandise on hand to sell. With fundraising, the best bet is to offer a variety of ways for people to contribute.

Sorry if I’m rambling- my head is full of stuffiness from a cold.

I like the idea of buying some stuff at a bulk retailer (candybars?) that wouldn’t go bad and that we can use later as well. I’d like to see us have additional movies, so having some extra is ok. Also in favor of asking for donated goods, of course. :) A popcorn machine would be great. I wonder if anyone has one?

Yeah @mark I think we should get some munchies for sure. We should ask for donations at GA on Sunday and then possibly buy more if necessary. Also who wants to go with me sometime to put up posters at coffeeshops etc? Melissa (@melissa51789) will let us know re: status of the panelists soon as well. We had also talked about putting together some info (pamphlet perhaps?) about our upcoming projects and plans to encourage people to get involved or contribute monetarily does anyone want to take that on? I can, if necessary but I’m pretty busy (finally got a job! actually potentially 2!)

@Ian – As of right now, I’m off Sunday (though I might end up working at 3:30pm) and all day Monday. I can also help out Tues-Thurs until 3pm and Friday/Sat after 5pm.

@Ian – Can you bring fliers to the Treasury meeting tomorrow? I saw you had a few on hand yesterday. We can coordinate this during the meeting, and ask for additional volunteers at GA. BTW thanks for making the FB event page :) Do we need additional copies?

I will be making about 25 one page flyers and another 80 or so of the smaller 4-ups today and will bring them to the meeting tomorrow. Do people want to go put them around town after?

I’ve been posting the poster to the community groups I know about on facebook, and to other community personalities that I think would be supportive. I’m no longer a member of any of the Occupy KC facebook groups, but I assume someone has posted this on each one? (If not, someone please do.) We need to make this locally viral this week. 8)

@drcage Okay so maybe not posting them up directly after Treasury meeting tomorrow, I actually will have to leave around 12ish because I have to drive my father to the airport. How about Monday afternoon maybe? @mark, Marc created a facebook event for the film screening. It is here.
