Direct Action has asked Treasury to come up with fundraising ideas, mainly to have money for bail funds in the event that they are needed. We also could use additional funds/resources to meet town planning and other needs. Does anyone have any ideas? I know we have access to a kitchen now at the church, so a meal fundraiser could be good. I’d like other ideas… and FYI, we’ll be getting some OCK branded stuff from the online store out on site as a thank you for donations, so that is underway. Tony |

I really like the idea of doing a community dinner for donation. We can have occupiers supply food potluck style, with a little more organization than the traditional potluck. We could also sponsor / promote a music event. I would think there would be musicians and venues here in town who would want to support this concept. I’d love to see Hearts of Darkness play and they’ve already expressed an interest in participating in events for us. |

Music could work in that main event hall in the church, just need an adequate PA. |

Which made me think of, oddly, polar opposites of a rave and square dancing (scary, eh). Going with rave: no alcohol, and no obvious other rave activities that are illegal and not church’y’. But, people have suggested movie night. There’s plenty of space. We can get occutheme movies, put up a screen, watch movies, drop donations on the way in, and have a refreshment stand replete with popcorn and chocolate. I like this. Every Friday. And then back to camp for smores if the weather is decent enough for fair weather folks. What think, peeps? @Christian I think that cooking together brings bonds tighter. Lets mess up the kitchen!

That was actually my initial reaction to the room, the movie night… with donations, documentaries, popcorn, koolaid, but super ropes not chocolate. And on Sundays. I think a rave is something to consider working up to but can be a nightmare to keep secure and safe for all at the risk of being a complete dud bummer money sink. I say stick with simple to start, movie night just requires a projecter, screen and simple audio and minimal to no security. Movies are also great “outreach” tools. Three cheers for positive outreach.

Here are the films that we are looking at for the fundraiser: The Corporation (excellent overview on the corporate model and the problems inherent in it) Golden Rule: The Investment Theory of Politics (documentary about Thomas Fergusons’ theory which articulates how powerful investors, not unorganized voters, dominate campaigns and elections and thus largely dictate policy) The Economics of Happiness (on localization of politics and economics as a solution to the myriad crises we face today) Capitalism: A Love Story (Michael Moore finally gets up the nerve to attack capitalism itself and does so fairly effectively with some heart wrenching anecdotes; has some good coverage of evictions and foreclosures that humanize this problem and relate well with OOH) Inside Job (Very good documentary on the 2008 housing crisis and subsequent financial crises, explains the situation about as well as any I’ve seen and is a very well produced documentary) Lifting the Veil: Obama and the Failure of Capitalist Democracy (excellent documentary on electoral politics and the Democratic party as the ‘graveyard of social movements.’ I like this one a lot, but it may not be the best introductory film. I would love to screen it down the road a bit however, perhaps as we get closer to the election season.) The Yes Men Fix the World (the ‘Yes Men’ are very clever political pranksters that pose as corporate execs and humiliate large businesses while exposing their questionable practices) Rise Like Lions: OWS and the Seeds of Revolution (Good documentary on the Occupy Movement specifically, could be good for building momentum for the coming American Spring!) Thoughts? Seen any of these? Most are available to stream at filmsforaction.org |

Here is a possible option for fundraising at the documentary screening. Aside from the suggested donation of $5, the refreshments are probably the easiest to produce and sell. Sure, you could purchase boxes of candy at Costco… but I’m willing to bet there are people who would donate baked goods to sell. And you could always do both. Soda, coffee, iced tea or other drink options (non-alcoholic, of course) might be wise. You could price all of these individually or just offer them for donation. Given the community feel of this event, I feel this could be a good option. And definitely have any existing merch on hand as well. What else? |

lets try to do something on the (blank) Saturday of every month. This month, movie night, next month, community dinner and music? |

I think we should definitely do a fundraiser / community event every month. That’s a great idea. As for the upcoming film screening fundraiser, Melissa please see this thread. |
